What does “bi-shakl” mean as an intensifier in Levantine Arabic?
بشكل (bi-shakl) is a Levantine Arabic intensifier meaning roughly “really” or “super,” used at the end of an adjective. In this clip a kid says “حامضة بشكل” (“sour, like, super”) about a fizzy candy he’s just opened. Bi-shakl literally means “in a shape,” but the everyday meaning is closer to English “ridiculously” or “so much.”
Intensifiers split Arabic dialects clearly: Egyptians say أوي (awi) or جدًا (jiddan), Gulf speakers say وايد (wāyed), and Levantines reach for bi-shakl or kteer. Hearing bi-shakl drop into casual speech is one of the fastest ways to place a speaker in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, or Jordan.
