What does “بجعة” mean in Arabic?

بجعة (bajaa)
Arabic elegant bird word
a swan — beautiful, long-necked water bird; the satisfying reveal word of Arabic fruit-carving

بجعة (bajaa) is the Arabic word for swan — graceful, long-necked, unmistakable. It comes from the root ب-ج-ع, which classically named the pelican, but in modern Arabic from Cairo to the Gulf, بجعة firmly means swan. The word earns its place at A2: three syllables, vivid image, and almost no learner meets it before the moment it clicks. When it does click, it sticks.

The whole video builds to one line: لتحصل على بجعة من تفاحة — “so you get a swan from an apple.” The speaker fans sliced apple into wings, shapes a neck from the core, and plants two seeds for eyes. بجعة is the payoff word, and hearing it land after watching the shape emerge is exactly why learners remember it. The collective form بجع (no taa marbuta) appears in the ballet title بحيرة البجع — “Swan Lake” — so once you know بجعة, the world’s most famous swan story opens up in Arabic too.
