What does “kundelek” mean in Polish?

Kundel is a mongrel, a dog of no particular breed. Add the diminutive -ek and you get kundelek, which turns a plain label into something fond: “my little mutt.” That is how Poles usually say it — Reksio jest kundelkiem (“Reksio is a mutt”) sounds warm, not dismissive. The ending also shows the instrumental case that Polish uses after jest when you say what someone is.

The dog’s name is a hook of its own. Reksio is the little spotted hero of a Polish cartoon from the 1960s and has been the default “generic dog name” ever since — the way an English speaker might reach for Rex or Fido. Ania’s video is pure beginner input: mam dwa psy (“I have two dogs”), Reksio jest biały (“Reksio is white”), ma dwa lata (“he’s two”) — and the -em on kundelkiem is the same instrumental you’ll hear in jestem studentem, “I’m a student.”
