What does “estoy seca para llorar” mean in Spanish?
When a mother answers her daughter’s thank-you with ya estoy muy seca para llorar, she isn’t dehydrated — she’s saying she’s all cried out, wrung dry of tears by a hard life. Seco/a (“dry”) is doing vivid metaphorical work: a body so worn down it can’t even produce tears anymore. It’s a tender, slightly self-deprecating way to deflect a moment that would otherwise make you weep.
The image of dryness for spent emotion is intuitive across languages, but the Spanish phrasing is its own thing — estar seco literally just means “to be dry,” and the para llorar (“for crying”) is what locks in the sense.
