What does 'opvoeren' mean for Dutch and Flemish e-bikes?
Opvoeren is the verb Dutch and Flemish news anchors use for derestricting a moped, scooter, or e-bike: software-flashing or hardware-tweaking a vehicle to go faster than its factory-set legal speed. Stock fatbikes top out at 25 km/h; once opgevoerd, they hit 40 or higher. Opvoeren is illegal, and police can confiscate the bike on the spot.
This Karrewiet kids-news segment walks Belgian teenagers through it: « sommige jongeren vinden dat toch nog te traag en daarom gaan ze hem opvoeren » (some teens still find it too slow, so they go and opvoeren the bike). One Belgian girl protests: « 25 kilometer per uur, ik vind dat wel heel snel genoeg » (25 km/h is plenty for me, thanks).
