What is a Dutch “biologische slagerij”?
A biologische slagerij is a Dutch organic butcher shop. Most Dutch slagerijen sell conventional meat, but the biologische segment has grown steadily since the 1990s in response to factory-farming concerns and consumer pressure. Biologisch-certified meat in the Netherlands carries the EKO-quality mark from SKAL (the country’s organic-certification body) and the EU green-leaf logo. The classification covers dimensions like uitloopruimte (free-range space), feed (no GMOs, organic only), antibiotic use (highly restricted), and slaughter practices. Dutch biologische slagerijen tend to be small, regionally-focused, and often supply bio-supermarkten like Ekoplaza and the Albert Heijn Puur en Eerlijk line.
In this clip, Het Klokhuis visits Bert: “Dit is de biologische slagerij van Bert. Biologisch betekent dat het vlees... komt van dieren die zijn opgegroeid met genoeg ruimte.”
