What is a Dutch “schutting”?
A schutting is a Dutch garden fence, but in cultural terms it’s far more than a wooden panel. The Netherlands runs the highest population density in Western Europe, which means most Dutch back gardens are tightly packed and a schutting is the line that defines whose space is whose. Dutch civil law (Burgerlijk Wetboek book 5) regulates schutting height, materials, and shared-cost rules in detail, and the schuttingruzie (fence dispute) is a famously common Dutch neighbour conflict. Garden TV shows like the Eigen Huis & Tuin universe build whole episodes around schutting redesigns.
In this clip, a Dutch garden show takes a viewer dilemma about “schutting en privacy” and a neighbour’s “open tandje en altijd aanspraak.”
