Sykkeen 12. kauden draamaa ja kohtalokkaita virheitä
B2 Finnish listening practice · Finnish · Curated for upper-intermediate learners
What does “panttivankitilanne” mean in Finnish?
Recapping the medical drama Syke, a tense beat arrives: «Siellä on sellainen panttivankitilanne» (“there’s a kind of hostage situation in there”). Panttivankitilanne is one word doing the work of three: panttivanki (“hostage”) plus tilanne (“situation”).
It shows off Finnish’s famous habit of bolting nouns together into long compounds where English needs a phrase. Break it down further and panttivanki is itself pantti (“pledge, deposit”) plus vanki (“prisoner”), a hostage held as a pledge. Syke (“pulse”) is Finland’s long-running hospital drama, so the stakes here are, fittingly, life and death.
