What does “Dato' Sri” mean in Malaysia?
This Malaysian radio interview features Dato' Sri Rossa, and that prefix is not part of her name, it’s a title. Dato' Sri (also written Datuk Seri) is a senior Malaysian honour, awarded by a state ruler or royalty, a bit like a knighthood. Once granted, it becomes how you address the person: Dato' Sri, not just “Rossa.”
Malaysia takes its gelar (titles) seriously, and they form a ladder: roughly Tun at the top, then Tan Sri, then Dato' Sri / Datuk Seri, then Datuk. You’ll hear them constantly in Malaysian media and events, so recognising Dato' and Tan Sri tells you instantly that someone is being honoured, not just named.
