What is the Italian “magnitudo” earthquake joke?
The punchline “perché magnitudo” only works out loud. Magnitudo is the seismic magnitude of an earthquake — but to a central-Italian ear it splits into magna tutto, “(it) eats everything,” because magnà is the colloquial Roman pronunciation of mangiare, to eat. So the quake that empties your plate has, of course, “magna tutto.” It’s a perfect lesson that Italian humour lives in regional pronunciation, not the standard form.
The same clip runs another classic: “7 cinesi entrano in un bar — 7 tè,” where the number sette sounds like the order seven teas. These are typical barzellette, the groan-worthy jokes Italians swap al bar. Learning magnà (eat), mo' (now), 'sti (these) — the clipped Romanesco forms — is what lets you actually get the jokes.
