What is 'Egri Csillag' in Hungarian wine?
Egri Csillag literally means Star of Eger. It’s a protected appellation white wine from the Eger wine region of northern Hungary, the white-wine counterpart to the region’s famous red, Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood). At least four grape varieties go into the blend, including indigenous Hungarian ones like Furmint, Hárslevelű, Olaszrizling, and Leányka. It launched as a category in 2010.
This local Eger TV news segment covers the Csillag Weekend festival on Dobó Square, where the Egri borvidék (Eger wine region) handed out awards. Mayor Vágner Ákos framed it neatly: « az Egri csillag egy üzenet, hogy hogyan lehet hagyományból megújulni » (Egri Csillag is a message about how to renew yourself out of tradition).
