What does “hinna med” mean in Swedish?
Swedish has a verb English lacks: hinna, meaning to have enough time to do something before the moment slips past. Add med and it becomes hinna med — keep up, manage it, don’t fall behind. An older man watching SMS and the internet arrive sighs, “man hinner inte med”: you just can’t keep up with it all. Four words that catch every generation’s feeling about new technology.
Hinna is irregular: hinna – hann – hunnit, the same vowel pattern as vinna (win) and finna (find). The negative form hinner inte med is the one you’ll hear most: “Jag hinner inte med allt” (I can’t keep up with everything). Flip it to say you just made it in time: “Vi hann med tåget” (we caught the train). The trick is that hinna is always about time, not speed — which is why there’s no clean English word for it.
