What is “Marktplaats” in the Netherlands?
Marktplaats is the Dutch second-hand classifieds site nearly every Dutchie has bought or sold something on. Founded in 1999, owned by eBay since 2004, it absorbed the Dutch market while eBay never really did. Marktplaats sells everything: bikes, kids' clothes, IKEA furniture, used keyboards, the occasional questionable couch. The platform is also the engine of an entire genre of Dutch comedy: the Marktplaats-oplichter sketch, in which a smooth seller passes off a broken something as gloednieuw.
In this maximeandsophie sketch, a seller named Jop pitches a wreck of a Cortina (Dutch budget-bike brand): “De cortina, grond nieuw?” The price negotiation: “Vijfvijftig, anders.”
