💡 Did you know?

What does “bleek” mean in Dutch?

bleek
Dutch appearance and complexion word
“pale,” for skin or colour that has lost its brightness

Bleek means pale — the kind of pale that draws attention, whether from illness, fright, or, as often happens to fair-skinned northerners abroad, from simply not seeing much sun. It applies to faces, skin, and colours alike. Dutch uses both wit (“white”) and bleek (“pale”) for fair skin, but bleek carries the edge of looking visibly drained or washed out — a subtle difference worth knowing.

In the clip a Belgian vlogger surveys his arms in the Prague summer heat and delivers a deadpan double: “Ik ben heel wit, ik ben heel bleek” — “I’m very white, I’m very pale.” Using both words back-to-back is naturally self-deprecating: wit is a neutral description, bleek tips it into “unhealthily colourless.” You will hear bleek in phrases like bleek zien (“to look pale”) or bleek wegtrekken (“to go pale,” as in shock). The word shares Germanic roots with English bleak and German bleich, all descending from a Proto-Germanic stem meaning bright or shining — the same root that, ironically, gave us words for pale and washed-out.
