What does “voorspoelen” mean in Dutch?
Voorspoelen means to rinse dishes before loading them into the dishwasher — but a Dutch dishwasher tip says don’t do it. The word shows a handy pattern: voor- means “pre-” or “in advance,” and it attaches to countless Dutch verbs. Voorbereiden is to prepare (literally pre-make), voorkomen is to prevent (pre-occur), and voordoen is to demonstrate. Once you spot voor-, you can guess a whole class of verbs on sight.
The clip explains why skipping the pre-rinse is actually smarter: the machine constantly measures how dirty the water is. If the plates arrive clean, the machine assumes there must be baked-on residue it can’t detect, and it scrubs unnecessarily hard. So voorspoelen wastes water and tricks your dishwasher at the same time. The prefix voor- is separable in Dutch, which means it splits off in main clauses: Spoel de borden niet voor (“Don’t pre-rinse the plates”). This separability is a reliable signal that voor- is carrying the “pre-” meaning, not the alternative unstressed reading found in inseparable verbs like voorkomen (to prevent).
