Why is “domme Belg” a Dutch joke trope?
Domme Belg (“dumb Belgian”) is a Dutch joke trope, the cross-border equivalent of how Americans joke about Polish jokes or how Brits joke about the Irish. The format is centuries old and runs in both directions: Dutch jokes paint Belgians as slow, Belgians counter with domme Hollander punchlines about Dutch stinginess (“De Hollander gooit z’n laatste cent in de collectebus, naar boven, als hij denkt dat God niet kijkt”). Belgian and Dutch comedians, including Jeroen Meus, Theo Maassen, Steven Geubels, and Wim Helsen, mine the trope freely. The cliché is funny precisely because the Belgian-Dutch border is largely invisible.
In this clip, a Flemish creator pushes back: “Ik heb deze reactie gekregen dat ik een domme Belg ben, dus vandaag ga ik bewijzen dat Belgen niet dom zijn.”
