A1 German listening practice · Standard German · Curated for beginners
What do “einsteigen,” “aussteigen,” and “umsteigen” mean in German?
German builds its whole travel vocabulary from one core verb: steigen, “to climb.” Bolt a direction onto the front and you get the trio every commuter needs. einsteigen is in + climb = get on. aussteigen is out + climb = get off. umsteigen is um (around, over) + climb = switch vehicles, change trains. Learn the root once and three verbs come free.
All three are separable: the prefix jumps to the end of the sentence — Ich steige an der nächsten Haltestelle aus**. The pattern keeps paying off beyond transit: *umsteigen* also means “to switch over” in general, as in changing careers or swapping to green energy.
