What does “me regala” mean in Colombian Spanish?
In much of Latin America — Colombia especially — regalar (“to gift”) gets used for ordinary requests, not just presents. Me regala un vaso de agua doesn’t mean “gift me water”; it’s simply a polite way to ask a stranger to hand something over. In this clip, a kid exploits exactly that politeness, asking his sleepy dad to “regalar” him cash and a phone.
The logic: framing a request as a “gift” softens it, the same way English speakers say “would you mind” instead of “give me.” You’ll hear ¿me regala la cuenta? in a restaurant, or ¿me regala su cédula? at a bank counter — nobody is expecting an actual gift, just a request phrased gently.
