What does “no se desbaraten” mean in Spanish?
As Janet folds the salad together, she shows off her potatoes: “por más que revuelvo, la papa queda intacta, no se desbarata” — no matter how much I stir, the potato stays whole, it doesn’t fall apart. “Desbaratarse” is when something soft crumbles into mushy pieces. She earlier added vinegar so the potatoes “no se desbaraten” while cooking. It’s a proud little cooking win, said with a smile.
Spoken line: “por más que revuelvo, la papa queda intacta, no se desbarata” — “no matter how much I stir, the potato stays whole, it doesn’t fall apart.” Earlier she also says “para que las papas no se desbaraten al cocerlas” — “so the potatoes don’t fall apart while they cook.” “Desbaratarse” means to come apart or crumble into pieces. You hear it most about food, but it works for other things too: - “El pastel se me desbarató al sacarlo del molde.” — The cake fell apart on me when I took it out of the pan. - “Con tanta lluvia, los planes se desbarataron.” — With all the rain, the plans fell apart. Tip: the spoken word ends in a weak e sound — “des-ba-ra-TA / des-ba-ra-TEN” — so the last part is soft and quick.
