finalização
Brazilian jiu-jitsu term
“submission” in jiu-jitsu; “a shot on goal” in football

In jiu-jitsu and MMA, a finalização is a submission: a choke or joint lock that makes the opponent give up. The verb is finalizar, so ele finalizou o adversário means “he submitted his opponent.” Because Brazilian jiu-jitsu grew up in Portuguese, this is the word you will hear in every Brazilian gym, where the person caught in the hold bate, taps out.

The same word changes meaning on a football pitch, where finalização is a shot at goal and a striker finaliza bem if he shoots well. In the clip Brock Lesnar wants to finalizar o Mir no ground and pound, but Frank Mir, a jiu-jitsu black belt, catches a leg and wins with a chave de joelho, a knee bar, a finalização that ends the fight.
