💡 Did you know?
tender la ropa
Spanish household verb
“to hang the laundry out to dry” (from tender, “to spread out”)

To hang laundry out to dry, Spanish uses tender la ropa, not only colgar. Tender means to spread something out, so the object you hang it on is the tendedero: a clothesline or drying rack. The whole washing routine becomes a chain of verbs: sacar, tender, sacudir, doblar (take out, hang, shake, fold).

The speaker says colgar la ropa o tenderla and explains that tender is the verb we use, because this is a tendedero. Once the clothes are dry, she takes them down with destender, a regional word; many speakers just say quitar or recoger la ropa. The same tender appears in tender la cama (“to make the bed”) and tender una mano (“to lend a hand”).
