Why do Finns call McDonald’s “Mäkkäri”?
Mäkkäri is the Finnish nickname for McDonald’s, formed by clipping the brand name and adding the productive Finnish slang suffix -ri. Finland loves to nickname chains and concepts: Hesburger stays close to its original, Prisma (the supermarket) becomes Prisukka, and McDonald’s gets the affectionate Mäkkäri. The ending lets a foreign brand sound Finnish-mouth-friendly.
This clip is part of the euron juusto (“one-euro cheeseburger”) TikTok genre, where Finnish creators reverse-engineer Mäkkäri’s two-euro cheeseburger to see if they can build the same thing at home for one euro. The genre captures Finnish frugality plus Finnish DIY humor.
