What does “수제” mean in Korean?

수제 means “handmade,” and it’s the prefix Koreans stamp on a product to say it wasn’t churned out in a factory. It’s two Sino-Korean pieces: 수 (手, “hand”) plus 제 (製, “made”). So 수제버거 is a hand-built burger, 수제맥주 is craft beer, and 수제비누 is handmade soap. Spot 수제 in front of a food or product word and you can read it as “artisan, made by hand.”

Because 수제 is a noun-prefix, it sits right before the noun it describes — often written solid (수제버거, 수제맥주), though you’ll also see it spaced (수제 초콜릿); spacing conventions vary.
