💡 Did you know?

What does “kappal” mean in Tamil?

கப்பல் (kappal)
Tamil noun · Gen-Z slang
Literally “ship,” but Tamil internet uses it the way English uses shipping a couple, lifted from Western fan culture

கப்பல் (kappal) is the standard Tamil word for ship (the seafaring kind). Tamil-speaking Gen Z then borrowed the English fan-culture verb to ship and remapped it onto the literal noun, so calling two friends oru kappal now means I ship them as a couple. The same English-loan-to-existing-word substitution shows up across South Indian languages: Telugu jodi, Kannada pair, Malayalam kettu.

In this Vishnu Popzz sketch, two friends posing as bike riders narrate a chaotic kappal couple riding past, then pivot into one suitor singing his crush’s favourite song with new lyrics. The whole thing assumes the viewer already knows that kappal has nothing to do with ships and everything to do with romance.
