Wat is jouw lievelingskleur?
A1 Dutch listening practice · Dutch · Curated for beginners
What does “lieverd” mean in Dutch, and why does it sound like “lievert”?
Lieverd is what a Dutch parent calls a child, or a partner calls a partner: “darling,” built from lief, “dear, sweet.” Spell it with a final d, but say it as if it ended in t, because Dutch turns a word-final d into t: lieverd sounds like “lievert.” That is why you will often see it typed as lievert, and why the d/t rule matters for listening too.
The same lief sits inside lieveling (“favourite, pet”), and the clip’s title word lievelingskleur is lieveling plus a linking -s plus kleur, “favourite colour.” Diminutive lieverdje is even softer, and liefje and schat are other pet names in the same family. In the clip, a child and a parent trade orders and colour answers (“de lievelingskleur is groen”), the kind of home talk where lieverd lives.
