What does “pegar e” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?

pegar e
Brazilian storytelling habit
“go and, up and” before another verb; ele pegou e saiu, “he up and left”

In spoken Brazilian Portuguese, pegar e + a verb does not mean “grab.” It marks a decision or a sudden move, like English “went and” or “up and”: aí ele pegou e foi embora, “then he just up and left.” The real action is the second verb. Brazilians use it all the time when telling stories, and sometimes drop the e: peguei, saí.

Once you notice it, you will hear it everywhere, usually after aí: aí eu peguei e liguei pra ela. It belongs to speech, not to writing. The fighter in the clip uses it as a habit three times in one answer: você não pode pegar e ficar pensando somente numa forma de ganhar, você tem que pegar e pensar em evolução, and é isso que eu tento pegar e fazer.
