Скетч: Диалог отца и сына про дискотеку
A1 Russian listening practice · Standard Russian · Curated for beginners
Why do Russians say “пап” and “мам” instead of “папа” and “мама”?
When Russians call out to someone, they often chop off the final vowel: папа → пап!, мама → мам!, Маша → Маш!, Саша → Саш! This clipped form is only for addressing a person directly, never for talking about them. It’s warm and everyday, the sound of a kid tugging a sleeve: пап, пап, пап!
Linguists sometimes call it the “new vocative,” since Russian lost its old vocative case (Боже! and Господи! are leftovers). It works with most names and family words ending in -а/-я: бабуля → бабуль!, Оля → Оль! The sketch repeats пап, привет! until the son gets to his real question: отпусти на дискотеку.
