💡 Did you know?

What sound does a dog make in Korean?

멍멍 (meongmeong)
Korean animal-sound words
“woof woof,” a dog’s bark in Korean

A Korean dog says 멍멍 (meongmeong), a cat says 야옹 (yaong), a pig says 꿀꿀 (kkulkkul) and a cow says 음메 (eumme). Korean is full of doubled sound words like these, and children turn them into names: a dog becomes 멍멍이 and a cat 야옹이, much like “doggy” and “kitty.” You will hear both forms with kids and pet owners.

The clip lines up the same animals in three languages. The dog’s bark shifts from Korean 멍멍 to Japanese ワンワン (wanwan) and Chinese 汪汪 (wāngwāng), heard in the transcript as 왕왕. The cow goes from 음메 to Japanese モーモー (mōmō) and Chinese 哞哞 (mōu mōu). Korean’s doubling habit runs well past animals: 깜빡깜빡 for blinking, 반짝반짝 for twinkling, 쿵쿵 for thudding steps.
